Well-written scenes are the backbone of every great novel.
Scenes are the micro-stories that add together to create a novel that readers can't put down.
A story that touches them deeply and causes them to tell others "You must read this!"
This Class Will Help You…
✅ Feel completely confident writing scenes. No more second-guessing or worrying about slowing your story down. You’ll know exactly how to reveal the past so it enhances every scene.
✅ Know exactly what crutial elements belong in every scene you write. You’ll have a simple framework for what to include, what to skip, and where it all belongs so your pacing stays strong and your story stays alive.
✅ Know how to edit pre-existing scenes so they pack a bigger punch and satisfy readers. You’ll finally feel confident weaving your characters’ histories naturally — turning backstory into the emotional engine that drives your story forward.
“Heather is a brilliant book coach for speculative fiction writers. She’s bursting with great ideas, she has an incredibly in-depth and mature story sense, and she is so well-read. She keeps in mind the many story models out there without ever hewing to one, helping you understand how to best develop your story. Her insights into my story are always delivered with kindness and “you can do this” and I have yet to disagree with one comment she’s made. I could not write this novel without her. Don’t hesitate to work with her.”

“I cannot say enough about the value I have received from working with Heather over the last six+ months. I have been able to evolve the startings of a pretty cheesy fairytale that I didn’t think had much potential to a full framework/story arc and ~70 pages of good, thoughtful content and scenes. My characters are interesting, my story is relevant and the theme feels important in a way that it fully lacked when I got started. The tools and tips are provided in a way that meet the particular writing challenge in the right way to be useful and implementable. She effortlessly provides high level guidance and nitty gritty grammar commentary and it is all helpful through the process. Before I met with Heather I felt alone in a cave, wondering if there really was a way out or if I should give up. With Heather, I have had a guide through the darkest, gnarliest challenges a new writer faces and it feels good to have faced the challenge to grow as a writer under her guidance.“
“I wholeheartedly recommend Heather Davis as Book Coach to any author working on a manuscript, whether it’s their first or fifth. Her insight and knowledge about great narrative and her passion for getting to the deep heart of your characters is invaluable. She brings an objective eye to your work to determine the strengths and weaknesses while offering a wealth of strategies to help you forge ahead with greater clarity. Heather’s coaching has been pivotal in helping me overcome specific writing challenges and continue to progress towards completing my manuscript, all the while reminding me to celebrate the little victories achieved throughout the process.
When you think you can’t keep going or your self-doubt is threatening to sabotage your writing – Heather is the motivator and cheer squad you need.”

Hey, Storyteller!
My name is Heather Davis. I’m a certified book coach and developmental editor.
I teach passionate speculative fiction writers how to craft their story from the ground up so they can get unstuck and get down to the work of writing a powerful novel that promotes diversity, explores big ideas, and turns casual readers into loyal fans.
There’s a seat for you in this class if you’ve been:
❌ So nervous about backstory that you cut it all out… and end up with flat characters and a story that just feels “off.”
❌ Adding backstory only to have critique partners or beta readers say it slowed everything down.
❌ Positive your protagonist’s past matters, but feeling unsure how to reveal it without losing momentum.
❌ Never quite sure how much to include — or where to put it — so you end up guessing (and hoping it works).
❌ Unsure what backstory actually belongs in the first few chapters — so you constantly feel like you’ve included the wrong things (or not enough).
What You’ll Get Inside:
✨ Two 2-Hour Live Classes packed with real examples, clear explanations, and aha! moments you can immediately apply to your own scene.
✨ Printable Workbooks with powerful exercises that help you take what you’re learning and put it right onto the page.
✨ Copies of All Slides so you can keep every key takeaway handy for future drafts.
✨ Time to Ask Questions Bring your story struggles! You’ll have time in class to get personal feedback and guidance.
✨ Lifetime Access To The Course so you can revisit the replays, slides, and workbook whenever you need a refresh or a spark of inspiration.
✨Bonus: Scene Review Giveaway Two lucky participants will win an in-depth scene review focused on the scene elements we cover in this class. I’ll even go over a one live (with permission!) so everyone can learn from real examples.

Ready to Master Backstory?
The strongest stories never begin on page one. They begin in the echoes of your protagonist’s past. Their fears, desires, and defining moments are the heartbeat of everything you write, and when you learn how to use that invisible history with intention, your entire story transforms.
Your world feels richer.
Your characters feel real.
Your readers feel completely immersed.
If you are ready to make that shift, now is the time to join this class.

If you are in the planning or outlining phase, you will learn how to identify the exact backstory your protagonist needs and how to build their emotional foundation before you write a single scene. If you are revising, you will learn how to diagnose flat moments, strengthen emotional depth, and determine exactly what backstory to mine for and where it belongs in your novel. This class is designed to support writers at every stage.🌻
Is this class useful if I struggle with pacing or info dumping?

Submitting a scene automatically enters you into the giveaway.🌻
